Macromedia Flash, which is now called Adobe Flash, is a multimedia tool that is used to generate documents for the Adobe Engagement Platform. The creation of Macromedia Generator started a division between content and design within Flash documents. However, Macromedia Generator fell out of favor by 2002 when tools such as ColdFusion were introduced. The combinations of Flash with XML has led to a number of advances in interactivity.
Flash has continued to gain popularity over the years. By the end of 2001, the most popular websites in the world were using it, and developers have begun using it for a number of different applications in the last few years. The release of Macromedia MX is 2002 offered a number of powerful features, and some of these included video and other powerful tools. The runtime version was also improved in newer versions of the software. Adobe Systems, a rival of Macromedia, acquired both Flash and the company in 2005. The primary programming language that is now used with Flash is ActionScript. ActionScript has a number of similarities with JavaScript, but it also has a number of notable differences as well. ActionScript places an emphasis on creating interactivity. The newest versions of Flash are now offering support for XML.
