The Church of the Nazarene was founded in 1895, and after a year had past, the church had already successfully united other regional churches which were smaller in size. John Wesley was primary responsible for laying down the foundation that would allow the church to be formed. Wesley was one of the founders of the holiness movement. Some of the things that Wesley introduced were sanctification by grace via faith. Despite the many thing that Wesley achieved, it was Phineas Bresee that is considered to be the founder of the Church of the Nazarene. The goal of this church was to reach those who were poor and in need.

The Church of the Nazarene has now grown to include over 150 regions around the globe, and the total membership for the church is well over 1 million. The Church of the Nazarene is also known for playing an important role in educational institutions. The Church of the Nazarene is one of the members of the World Methodist Council. This Church begin to experience international growth early in its history. In addition to Canada, this Church can also be found in places as far away as Japan. This church was quick to take advantage of revolutionary technologies such as radio. Members of this church are known for their missionary work, and many of them operate in areas that are centers instability.

The name of the church is taken from the term "Nazarene," which was used to describe those who were followers of Christ. One of the presidents of the church, J.P. Widney, described the term "Nazarene" as being a person who toils to carry out the mission of Christ. Unlike many Christian denominations, the Church of the Nazarene has placed an emphasis on giving their message to those who are considered to be the lower classes. The concept of holiness plays an important role in the practices and belief system of this church. Members believe in the divinity of Jesus, as well as baptism and the return of Christ. They also believe that the dead will one day be brought back to life.

Members of the Church of Nazarene believe that humans have the right to choose free grace. Unlike many Protestant churches, members of this church believe that the Holy Spirit can be used to give power to Christians, allowing them to be much more faithful to God. It should also be noted members of this church do not believe in the concept of a Christian sinning each day. Through entire sanctification, it is believed that an individual can get rid of the chains of original sin by becoming devoted to God. The concept of entire sanctification is directly connected to love. Like many Christian denominations, members of this church obstain from things such as cigarettes or alcohol. While alcohol itself is not considered to be a problem, the church believes that it sets the stage for which problems can occur.
