New Haven is the second largest city in the US State of Connecticut. It is located near New Haven Harbor, and it has been given the nickname Elm City. Hundreds of Puritans left the Massachusetts Bay Colony to settle in the region in 1638. The population of New Haven continued to grow after World War II, and a number of African Americans and Puerto Ricans settled in the region. However, the city begin to decline from the 1960s through the 1990s. In addition to the population leaving the state, it suffered economically. A number of attempts were made to improve the city through renewal projects. There were are large number of battles between the city of New Haven and Yale over the use of land and taxes. Even though New Haven has improved since the 2000s, poverty is still an issue for many people.
