However, the city begin to decline from the 1960s through the 1990s. In addition to the population leaving the state, it suffered economically. A number of attempts were made to improve the city through renewal projects. There were are large number of battles between the city of New Haven and Yale over the use of land and taxes. Even though New Haven has improved since the 2000s, poverty is still an issue for many people.
