Along with all contact data, the dataset also includes the specialty categories for each member.The Georgia Bar Association was first established in the 1880s by a group of lawyers who lived in the state. This organization would be responsible for bringing a number of benefits to the members, but since many lawyers in the state were not required to join it, it did not have a great deal of power. It is the concept of the Georgia State Bar being an voluntary institution that weakened its ability to be effective. One of the first people to point this out was Charles Gowen, who was president of the Georgia Bar during the 1940s. It was important for the organization to overcome this barrier is they wish to address the many needs of the state. It would also give them the ability to pass crucial legislation.
